AILEEN RANKIN GARDEN & LANDSCAPE DESIGN
A back garden with a contemporary streamline feel, straight lines and very little maintenance. A small patio at the house area for morning sun with a chair and coffee table met the lawn area with a larger patio for the barbeque and entertaining. Some lighting was installed in the path and main patio, and the wall doubled up as extra seating.
Manor Place, Edinburgh
Description: This garden is long and narrow surrounded by townhouses and is very shady. A straight path from the house to the back gate divides the garden. The shade and dampness left the grass as a muddy area, so Astro Turf was the answer in this case. Border planting and trellis frames for climbers have been successful, with evergreen shrubs planted at the back garden to hide a dark roughcast wall. Shady planting here was essential. This is a family garden with a picnic table and toys.
Hillview Road, Edinburgh
A sloped garden on different levels. The patio area had to be levelled for the summer house and table and chairs to sit on. A greenhouse had to stay in situ but the shed was moved to stand bedside it instead of in front. This worked well as more light streamed on to the greenhouse and there was room for a cold frame and nursery bed. A stepping down was built to flower beds through a rose arbour that had to stay in the same place. A new lawn, laid as turf, was built up to lie level. New steps were laid with the patio slabs.
Hillview Drive, Edinburgh
This garden had to be completely cleared of old overgrown shrubs and rubble before starting. A new fence was erected for privacy as this is a corner site on a busy road. This is the top of the garden where the sun hits the patio all day. The paths break up the flower beds for easy access and maintenance, also giving a cottage feel with the cobbled path. The grass was removed and new turf laid to improve the whole garden look. A plant plan was in progress at this point.
